Sustainable management

Cost-effective achievement of world-class operational standards is being enabled through an exclusive partnership with BREEAM, which is known as the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master-planning construction projects, infrastructure and buildings.

Under the partnership, BREEAM and EEA will be co-creating the first global, scientifically robust standard for sustainable building management in the hospitality industry, covering: energy, water, transport, management, waste, pollution, health & well-being, land use & ecology and materials. It will be known as BREEAM in Use for the Hospitality industry (BiUH).

In creating it, EEA and BREEAM will establish a technical group made up of experts from EEA members and BREEAM, who will review and approve standards, and the overall operation of the scheme, on an ongoing basis. Over time, it is intended that BREAAM will align its construction and refurbishment standards for hotels with BiUH.

EEA members will gain exclusive access to the BiUH platform via the internet, enabling them to undertake a self-assessment of their property and generate a benchmarking report on their current performance plus a gap analysis, indicating essential remedial action.

Doing this has three main benefits:

  • First, it provides management with a rigorous report and improvement plan

  • Second, it helps reduce the costs of gaining formal certification because members can undertake much of the preparatory work themselves; although, an independent qualified assessor is still needed to complete the process

  • Third, members will become educated on best practice, as an annual training course on how the BiUH scheme woks will be included in EEA membership

Also included in membership is the standard BREEAM building registration fee and a discount on BREEAM’s usual certification fee.

100% renewable energy

The Alliance is able to offer members net zero carbon energy by virtue of its relationship with Businesswise Solutions, a specialist energy trader, which procures net zero carbon energy on the energy markets, at a scale and on commercial terms most hotel chains could not match, and makes it available to members via its Renewable Energy Basket.

It achieves the zero-carbon guarantee by forward buying Renewable Energy Certificates, which are effective proof that the energy in the basket has been generated from renewable sources such as hydroelectric, solar or wind power.
